Under Review, On Hold, In Use

In this lesson, you can build natural status predicates with be or remain.

Created by , British English teacher.

I’m studying:

Try the activities, then check your answers.

Choose a short recording.

Before you start

Describe a process that has paused.

See one possible response

The project is on hold.

You track fictional repairs to a shared printer and the status of a replacement-part request.

What you will practise
  • Build natural status predicates with be or remain.
  • Distinguish status, current activity and completion.
  • Reformulate a status update without adding an unsupported decision.

Respond before revealing. Preserve participant roles, source limits and register; justify a valid alternative where the context permits it.

Prepositional phrases as predicates

After be or remain, a prepositional phrase can describe a status: The request is under review; the printer is in use. These are not ordinary be + past-participle passives. Learn the complete conventional phrase, not a rule allowing any preposition with any noun.

The replacement request is under review.

The smaller printer is in use at the moment.

They discuss a request folder set in a neutral pending tray beside a closed decision envelope. Thoughtful expressions convey an under-review status without showing a decision or pretending an active examination at every moment.
The request remains under review; no decision has been issued. The status need not describe someone examining it at this exact moment.

Status is not always a live action

Under review can name an administrative stage even when nobody is examining the request at that exact moment. On hold indicates a pause or pending state; it is not the same as cancelled. Interpret the status at the level the context supports.

The order is on hold while we confirm the model number.

The machine is out of use until the missing part arrives.

Translate for the audience

A status label may need a plain explanation: On hold means we have paused the order, not cancelled it. Retain uncertainty about cause, duration or agent if it is not supplied. Avoid replacing under review with approved, which changes the outcome.

The request remains under review; no decision has been issued.

The order is on hold, but it has not been cancelled.

Do not add an unnamed agent or an exact time

What the status givesThe request remains under review.

An administrative stage, with no outcome established.

What remains unstatedWho is reviewing it? Are they reading it now?

The status alone supplies neither answer.

Give a plain explanation of the stage. Ask for agent or activity details when they are needed rather than adding them to the report.
They put an order folder temporarily in a holding tray beside a boxed product, with the cancellation tray empty. The pause is clear and no torn document, cancellation cross or refund outcome is shown.
The order is on hold, but it has not been cancelled. The account explicitly distinguishes the pause from cancellation.

Guided practice

Say or write your answer first. Then compare the meaning and grammar with the model.

1. The request is ___ review.

Compare a model and explanation

The request is under review.

Under review is the established status phrase.

Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.

2. The order is on hold. Does that necessarily mean it has been cancelled?

Compare a model and explanation

No.

A paused or pending order may still proceed.

Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.

3. The printer is in use. The display says another user is printing now.

Compare a model and explanation

Someone is using the printer now.

The supplied display context supports the live-action paraphrase.

Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.

4. Under review appears in a status list, with no current activity information. Can you say a reviewer is reading it this second?

Compare a model and explanation

Not from that label alone.

Administrative stage and moment-by-moment activity are different.

Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.

5. The request is under review, so it has been approved.

Compare a model and explanation

The request is under review; approval has not been confirmed.

The status is not an outcome decision.

Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.

6. The order is paused because the model number is missing. Use on hold.

Compare a model and explanation

The order is on hold because the model number is missing.

The cause is included only because it is supplied.

Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.

7. The machine is out of use until a part arrives. No arrival date is known.

Compare a model and explanation

The machine is out of use; we do not yet know when the part will arrive.

Do not invent a return-to-service date.

Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.

8. A request is being considered, an order is paused and a spare printer is available now.

Compare a model and explanation

The request is under review, and the order is on hold. The spare printer is available now.

Different statuses remain distinct; no outcome is invented.

Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.

A short conversation

Listen to the exchange, then take one role. The speaker labels identify roles; do not narrate them.

Open the conversation transcript

User: The request says under review. Does that mean the part has been approved?

Coordinator: No decision has been issued yet. The order is on hold while we check the model number.

User: Is there anything I can use meanwhile?

Coordinator: The spare printer is available; the main one is still out of use.

Listening checks

Listen to each extract, then choose the best answer. These three questions have their own score.

1. What is its status?
Read the listening transcript

The order is on hold, not cancelled. We are waiting for the correct model number.

2. What can be reported safely?
Read the listening transcript

The request remains under review. The status page does not tell us whether anyone is examining it right now.

3. What is supported here?
Read the listening transcript

The smaller printer is in use at the moment; another user is printing twenty pages.

Answer key with explanations
  1. What is its status?

Paused pending information.: The speaker distinguishes hold from cancellation.

    Compare all choices
    • Paused pending information.: The speaker distinguishes hold from cancellation.
    • Fully completed.: The order is still pending.
    • Permanently cancelled.: Cancellation is explicitly denied.
  2. What can be reported safely?

It is at the review stage.: That status is given.

    Compare all choices
    • A named reviewer is reading it this second.: Neither the person nor live activity is known.
    • It is at the review stage.: That status is given.
    • The request has been rejected.: No decision is reported.
  3. What is supported here?

Someone is using the smaller printer now.: The following clause provides direct current-use context.

    Compare all choices
    • The print job has already finished.: It is described as ongoing.
    • The printer is permanently unavailable.: Only current use is stated.
    • Someone is using the smaller printer now.: The following clause provides direct current-use context.

Mastery quiz

Choose the best answer for each situation. The score is out of eight.

1. Which is a prepositional status predicate?
2. Which preserves on hold?
3. What does a status-only under review label fail to establish?
4. Which edit adds an unsupported outcome?
5. Can any preposition be substituted freely in a status phrase?
6. Which update preserves the unknown return date?
7. Which sentence clearly establishes current use?
8. Which report avoids inventing an agent?
Answer key with explanations
  1. Which is a prepositional status predicate?

The request is under review.: Under review is a prepositional phrase after be.

    Compare all choices
    • The reviewer examined the request.: This is an active clause.
    • The request was reviewed yesterday.: This is a past passive event.
    • The request is under review.: Under review is a prepositional phrase after be.
  2. Which preserves on hold?

Paused or pending, not necessarily cancelled.: The status leaves continuation possible.

    Compare all choices
    • Paused or pending, not necessarily cancelled.: The status leaves continuation possible.
    • Definitely cancelled forever.: That is too strong.
    • Already delivered.: That is a different stage.
  3. What does a status-only under review label fail to establish?

That someone is examining it at this exact moment.: The label can name a stage rather than continuous activity.

    Compare all choices
    • That the label contains a preposition.: Under is plainly present.
    • That someone is examining it at this exact moment.: The label can name a stage rather than continuous activity.
    • That review is the stated stage.: The label explicitly provides that.
  4. Which edit adds an unsupported outcome?

The request is approved.: Approval does not follow from under review.

    Compare all choices
    • The request is still under review.: This preserves the status.
    • The update gives no final decision.: This preserves the evidence limit.
    • The request is approved.: Approval does not follow from under review.
  5. Can any preposition be substituted freely in a status phrase?

No.: The combinations are conventional and lexically restricted.

    Compare all choices
    • No.: The combinations are conventional and lexically restricted.
    • Only in the present tense.: Tense does not remove lexical restrictions.
    • Yes, all prepositions express the same status.: Preposition choice changes or damages the expression.
  6. Which update preserves the unknown return date?

The machine is out of use until the part arrives; no date is confirmed.: The endpoint condition and uncertainty remain.

    Compare all choices
    • It will definitely work tomorrow.: This invents a date and outcome.
    • The machine is out of use until the part arrives; no date is confirmed.: The endpoint condition and uncertainty remain.
    • The part arrived last week.: That event is not supplied.
  7. Which sentence clearly establishes current use?

The printer is in use now; someone is printing a document.: The explicit ongoing action supports the status.

    Compare all choices
    • The printer may be used next month.: That is future possibility.
    • The printer was once in use.: That refers to an earlier period.
    • The printer is in use now; someone is printing a document.: The explicit ongoing action supports the status.
  8. Which report avoids inventing an agent?

The request remains under review; the reviewer is not named.: It separates status from unknown responsibility.

    Compare all choices
    • The request remains under review; the reviewer is not named.: It separates status from unknown responsibility.
    • The nearest named employee must be reviewing it.: Proximity does not establish agency.
    • The requester has approved it personally.: Neither actor nor approval is supplied.

Use it in your own words

Three statuses

Explain under review, on hold and in use in a fictional equipment update.

Reveal a possible response

The request is under review. The order is on hold until we confirm the model. The spare printer is in use right now.

  • Keep the status meanings distinct
  • Add only supplied timing

Different everyday equipment is acceptable.

Plain explanation

A colleague thinks on hold means cancelled. Clarify without promising the order will proceed.

Reveal a possible response

On hold means it is paused. It has not been cancelled, but we still need the missing information before it can move forward.

  • Distinguish pause and cancellation
  • Avoid a guarantee

Use clear language rather than more status jargon.

Put it all together

A fictional library display request is under review, its booking is on hold and a small display case is currently in use. Give a careful update and ask two useful questions.

Reveal a possible response

The request is under review, so approval is not confirmed. The booking is on hold. The small case is in use at the moment. What information is missing, and when can we expect the next update?

  • Preserve status versus outcome
  • Avoid inventing an agent or date
  • Retrieve a useful question pattern

Other clear questions are welcome.

Take it with you

Prepositional predicates can describe a status such as under review, on hold or in use. A status is not necessarily a continuous action occurring at the exact moment.
