Your situation

Rosa shows Ben a photo. “This is my brother, Dani. His daughter is Mia. That’s my sister, Eva, with her husband. Their son is next to them.” Ben asks, “Is Mia your niece?” “Yes, she is.”

Read the situation transcript

Rosa shows Ben a photo. “This is my brother, Dani. His daughter is Mia. That’s my sister, Eva, with her husband. Their son is next to them.” Ben asks, “Is Mia your niece?” “Yes, she is.”

In his daughter, whose daughter is Mia?

Compare your idea

She is Dani’s daughter.

How it works

Two adults discussing a small family photograph held between them.
This is her family.Picture context: the woman is showing a photograph of her own family. The relationship is supplied here.

Use my, your, his, her, our or their before a noun: my brother, her husband, their son. The word tells us whose family member we mean.

A name can also show the relationship: Dani’s daughter. Use ’s after one person’s name. His and her depend on the person being referred to, not the family member’s gender.

Possessive word + noun: her brother. Name + ’s + noun: Dani’s daughter.

Notice this

This is my sister.

She is the speaker’s sister.

Compare this

Her husband is here.

He is the husband of the woman just mentioned.

Hear the examples

This is my sister.

Her husband is here.

He is the husband of the woman just mentioned.

Their son is in the photo.

He is the son of the two people mentioned.

Dani’s daughter is Mia.

Mia is the daughter of Dani.

One mistake worth avoiding

Instead of: This is she brother.

Say: This is her brother.

Use her, not she, before the noun brother.
