Before you start
Turn a device that saves time into a compact noun phrase.
See one possible response
A time-saving device.
You edit short descriptions for a fictional community equipment catalogue.
What you will practise
- Interpret and build familiar compound modifiers.
- Recast a compound before a noun as a clear predicate phrase.
- Distinguish grammatical meaning from written hyphenation conventions.
Try first. For open responses, a model is one valid answer, not an exact-string key. Preserve the intended meaning and register.
Words working as one modifier
A compound modifier uses several words together before a noun: a time-saving device; a well-written guide. Read the words as one description of the following noun. The internal relationship matters: time-saving means it saves time, not that time is doing the saving.
We need a time-saving method.
The tutor shared a well-written explanation.

Move between positions
An easy-to-use camera becomes The camera is easy to use. Hyphens often show the grouped modifier before the noun. Do not extend this to every compound: some established compounds retain hyphens after be, while ordinary phrases such as well written commonly lose them.
It’s an easy-to-carry case.
The case is easy to carry.
Check the pattern, not just punctuation
Use a dictionary or the project’s style guide for established spelling. Adverbs ending in -ly usually remain separate before participles: a carefully written note. A spoken description can establish the meaning but cannot prove a written hyphen.
We received a carefully prepared schedule.
A problem-solving activity helped the group.

Guided practice
Say or write your answer first. Then compare the meaning and grammar with the model.
1. A device that saves space. Put the modifier before device.
Compare a model and explanation
a space-saving device
The noun space is part of the modifier’s meaning.
Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.
2. an easy-to-read label
Compare a model and explanation
The label is easy to read.
The label is the thing read, not the reader.
Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.
3. a carefully-written note. Apply the usual -ly adverb convention.
Compare a model and explanation
a carefully written note
An -ly adverb normally does not need a hyphen to the participle.
Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.
4. a time-saving tool; a tool that wastes time. Do these preserve the same meaning?
Compare a model and explanation
No.
Saving and wasting express opposite effects.
Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.
5. The instructions are well written. Put the description before instructions.
Compare a model and explanation
They are well-written instructions.
The hyphen groups the pre-noun modifier in the chosen house style.
Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.
6. All compounds lose their hyphens after be. Is this reliable?
Compare a model and explanation
No.
Established compounds such as user-friendly can retain a hyphen.
Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.
7. A recording says easy to use. Can you determine its written position before or after a noun from those three words alone?
Compare a model and explanation
No.
The full sentence and written convention are needed.
Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.
8. This case is light. It is easy to carry. This guide is written clearly. Combine useful descriptions without changing meaning.
Compare a model and explanation
It includes a light, easy-to-carry case and a clearly written guide.
Different modifier patterns keep their own internal form.
Accept a grammatical alternative that satisfies the stated prompt and this item’s explanation; the model is not an exhaustive exact-string key.
A short conversation
Listen to the exchange, then take one role. The speaker labels identify roles; do not narrate them.

Editor: The description says a time-saving organiser. What does it actually do?
Writer: It groups the forms, so users can find them more quickly.
Editor: Good. Is the guide easy to read as well?
Writer: Yes. I’ll describe it as an easy-to-read guide and check the written hyphens.

Listen to each extract, then choose the best answer. These three questions have their own score.

Describe useful items
Describe two fictional items with meaningful compound modifiers, then explain each in a full clause.
Reveal a possible response
It’s a space-saving rack: it folds flat. It’s an easy-to-clean tray: the surface is smooth.
- Preserve the modifier relationship
- Add a useful explanation
Avoid unsupported product claims by keeping the items fictional.
Edit aloud and in writing
Recast two pre-noun compounds after the noun and say which written details need checking.
Reveal a possible response
An easy-to-read sign becomes The sign is easy to read. A well-written note becomes The note is well written. I’d check the hyphens in the original versions.
- Preserve meaning
- Separate speech from spelling
The writing check can be done on screen.
Put it all together
Recommend equipment for a mobile study group using two compounds and one separate -ly modifier. Explain your choice rather than listing labels.
Reveal a possible response
I’d choose an easy-to-carry case and a space-saving stand. The carefully written guide would help new members. The case matters because we move between rooms.
- Use three modifier patterns
- Explain practical relevance
- Keep the description readable
Different fictional equipment is acceptable.
Take it with you
Build compounds from natural patterns, keeping the intended actor and meaning. Written hyphens help group modifiers. Audio does not test invisible spelling or punctuation.
