By the end: I can preserve uncertainty, former status and aspiration when compressing a description.

A qualified claim

Alleged warns that a description is claimed rather than simply endorsed as established. Removing it strengthens the claim.

The alleged author has not been identified independently.

The person said to have written the note has not been independently identified.

Two event organisers look toward an empty reserved chair beside an untouched small trophy and a neutral closed claim folder. Their expressions are uncertain about a reported winner who is absent. Do not show a crowned or established winner and do not imply a criminal allegation.
The alleged winner did not attend. The description is claimed rather than simply endorsed as established.

A previous status

Former places the relevant status or relation in the past. Clarify which part is no longer true rather than assume every nearby description is cancelled.

The former club chair now works as a tutor.

The club’s previous chair now works as a tutor.

Specify which part of a former role ended

The source distinguishes two subjectsShe used to teach music and now teaches art.

Music teaching ended; teaching itself continues.

An over-broad summaryShe no longer teaches.

This removes the supplied fact that she still teaches art.

A phrase such as former music teacher can leave the scope unclear in context. Expand it when the distinction matters, preserving the role or relation that actually ended.

An intended status

Would-be describes someone aspiring or intending to occupy a role. It need not establish that they hold it, nor guarantee they will fail to obtain it.

The would-be designer brought a portfolio.

The aspiring designer brought a portfolio.

The same organisers look toward the empty chair with a reflective expression. A modest older medal in a display case and an archived closed record folder indicate a previous champion status rather than a current victory. The former champion is absent; no award presentation.
The former champion did not attend. The relevant champion status is placed in the past.

Guided practice

Say or write your answer first. Compare form and meaning with the model.

1. What does removing alleged from alleged author risk?

Compare a model and explanation

Presenting unverified authorship as established.

The qualification carries substantive information.

2. Does alleged author necessarily mean the person is not the author?

Compare a model and explanation

No.

The claim may be true or false; the adjective does not settle it.

3. Rewrite former club chair explicitly.

Compare a model and explanation

The person who previously chaired the club.

Preserve the relevant former role.

4. Does former music teacher always settle whether the person still teaches another subject?

Compare a model and explanation

No.

The larger context may be needed to identify what changed.

5. Paraphrase would-be designer without claiming success or failure.

Compare a model and explanation

A person aspiring to become a designer.

Keep aspiration distinct from outcome.

6. Source: Jo once coordinated the project and now advises it. Compress carefully.

Compare a model and explanation

Jo, the former project coordinator, now advises the project.

Do not erase the current advisory role.

7. Repair: Source says alleged creator, not verified. Summary says proven creator.

Compare a model and explanation

The person alleged to have created it; the attribution is unverified.

Do not strengthen the evidence.

8. Why keep these modifiers in a concise summary?

Compare a model and explanation

They qualify status or certainty and can change what the noun phrase asserts.

They are not disposable decoration.

A short conversation

Listen first, then open the transcript when useful.

Open the conversation transcript

A: Your caption calls him the author.

B: The source only calls him the alleged author.

A: So I should preserve that qualification?

B: Yes. We have an attribution, not independent confirmation.

Listening checks

Listen to each extract or open its transcript. These three questions have a separate score.

1. Which role is explicitly earlier?
Read the listening transcript

The former club chair is now the treasurer.

2. What is supported?
Read the listening transcript

A would-be illustrator submitted a portfolio. The record gives no later career outcome.

3. What is a faithful summary?
Read the listening transcript

The alleged author of the message denies writing it. No independent evidence is supplied.

Mastery quiz

Choose the best answer for each situation. The score is out of eight.

1. Alleged author primarily signals what?
2. Former club chair implies what about the relevant role?
3. Would-be designer establishes which status?
4. What can deleting alleged do to a summary?
5. A former music teacher now teaches art. Which summary preserves both facts?
6. An allegation and a denial with no independent evidence establish what here?
7. Which is an appropriate fuller paraphrase of would-be filmmaker?
8. Why check the scope of former in a dense phrase?

Use it in your own words

Speaking 1

Give three qualified descriptions and explain what each does not establish.

Reveal a possible response

An alleged author is not thereby verified. A former chair need not have stopped all club work. A would-be designer has not thereby succeeded or failed.

Success check: Preserve the distinct uncertainty and time relationships.

Speaking 2

Compress a factual role change without deleting the current role.

Reveal a possible response

Jo used to coordinate the project and now advises it. Jo, the former coordinator, is now an adviser.

Success check: State the changed and continuing relations.

Put it all together

A fictional archive has an unverified attribution to Kim, a previous editor named Rosa and an aspiring illustrator named Lee. Write a concise caption and then expand every qualification.

Reveal a possible response

The alleged author Kim, former editor Rosa and would-be illustrator Lee appear in the record. Kim’s authorship is unverified, Rosa’s editorship is previous, and Lee’s illustration career is an aspiration with no outcome supplied.

Success check: Do not convert any qualification into stronger evidence or a different status.

Take it with you

I can preserve uncertainty, former status and aspiration when compressing a description.
