Your goal: Choose causative patterns that express agency, responsibility and register accurately in complex situations.

Read, try each short Say it task aloud, then compare with a model. Finish with the mastery quiz.

1. Separate the organiser from the performer

Compare I checked the equipment with I had the equipment checked. The first makes me the performer. In the service reading of the second, I arranged the check and someone else performed it.

The object receives the action
PatternExampleFocus
have + object + past participleWe had the equipment checked. An arranged service or action
get + object + past participleWe got the equipment checked.A similar arrangement, often less formal
have/get in different tensesWe are having the room painted.Have/get carries the tense; the final participle stays painted.

The performer can be named: We had the equipment checked by an independent engineer. Naming the engineer helps when expertise or responsibility matters.

Past service

We had the report translated last week.

Had is the past form of the causative verb.

Present perfect service

We have had the report translated.

The first have forms the present perfect. The second, had, belongs to the causative pattern.

Meaning check: “We have translated the report” normally presents us as the translators. “We have had the report translated” presents us as arranging the translation.

Listen: who did the work?

Listen to each example and identify the person who arranged, performed or experienced the action.

Model transcript and listening guidance

A project problem: I had the equipment checked before the event. I got Maya to stay and help. I made the supplier replace the damaged cables. We finally got everything working.

Different kinds of responsibility: I had my assistant book the room. I had my bag stolen on the train. The supplier was made to replace the cables. Maya was allowed to leave early.

Listening guidance: A technician checked the equipment; the speaker arranged it. Maya was persuaded to stay. The supplier replaced the cables because the speaker required it. The bag theft was an unwanted experience.

2. Name the person and choose the kind of influence

The person performs the following action
PatternExampleTypical meaning here
have + person + base verbI had Maya check the list.Instruct or arrange
get + person + to-infinitiveI got Maya to check the list.Persuade or bring about
make + person + base verbI made Maya check the list.Require or compel
let + person + base verbI let Maya check the list.Permit

These are not interchangeable reports of the same relationship. I made her stay suggests pressure or a requirement. I let her stay says she was permitted to do so.

Form check: have her check; get her to check; make her check; let her check.

Not every make describes deliberate force

The delay made me worry describes a caused reaction. No person necessarily intended it. Interpret the whole situation, not just the verb.

3. Change the viewpoint without losing the pattern

Active and passive viewpoints
ActivePassive or natural alternative
They made the supplier replace the cables. The supplier was made to replace the cables.
They let Maya leave early.Maya was allowed to leave early.

In the passive of causative make, restore to: was made to wait. For permission, be allowed to is the normal passive alternative to let someone do.

The passive can be useful when the affected person is the topic. But if accountability matters, retain the decision-maker: The supplier was required by the event manager to replace the cables.

Register: in a formal report, arranged for, persuaded, required or permitted can make the intended relationship more explicit. Choose precision, not simply a longer phrase.

4. Do not infer intention from the structure alone

An unwanted experience

I had my bag stolen on the train.

This normally describes something I experienced, not something I commissioned.

A result brought about

We got the printer working.

Get + object + -ing can describe bringing something into operation. Compare We tried to get it working (an attempt) with We managed to get it working (success).

Context decides: The manager had two files removed. This could describe an arrangement; in another context it could describe a loss the manager experienced. A careful report specifies what the evidence supports.

C1–C2 editing example: remove an unsupported implication

Evidence: two files disappeared while the manager was away; nobody knows who deleted them.

Misleading draft: “The manager had the files deleted.” This invites an arranged-action reading.

Clear report: “Two files were deleted while the manager was away. We have not established who deleted them.”

The clearer version preserves uncertainty instead of assigning responsibility without evidence.

Repair and explain

Try each repair aloud or in writing before opening the answer.

Repair both patterns: “I got the assistant check the list, but the supplier was made replace the cables.”

Check the repair

I got the assistant to check the list, but the supplier was made to replace the cables.

Get + person takes a to-infinitive. Passive make also takes a to-infinitive.

The evidence says an assistant booked the room after your instruction. Repair this inaccurate claim: “I booked the room myself.”

Check the repair

I had my assistant book the room.

This identifies the assistant as the performer and you as the person arranging or instructing the action.

10. Which distinction is accurate in the usual service reading?

Full answer key with explanations
  1. I had the equipment checked by an engineer.. The causative separates your arrangement from the engineer’s work.
  2. have had. Have had forms a present perfect causative: we arranged a translation that is now complete.
  3. I got Maya to stay.. Get + person + to-infinitive can convey persuasion.
  4. I had the assistant check the list.. Causative have + person takes the base verb.
  5. We were made to wait.. The active base verb becomes a to-infinitive after passive make.
  6. She was allowed to leave.. Be allowed to is the natural alternative.
  7. I experienced an unwanted theft.. Context gives have something done an unwanted-experience reading.
  8. We tried to get the printer working.. Tried reports an attempt; it does not by itself confirm success.
  9. The files were deleted; the person responsible is unknown.. This preserves the known event without inventing an organiser.
  10. I repaired it makes me the performer; I had it repaired normally makes me the organiser.. The contrast helps report responsibility accurately.

Put it into practice

Write a 70–100-word incident report. Include a service you arranged, a person you persuaded, a requirement imposed on someone and one uncertainty you cannot resolve. Keep the roles explicit.

Self-check: Underline each causative. Name its organiser, performer and affected object. Check to after get + person and passive make. Remove any unsupported claim about intention.

Compare with a model

Before the event, I had the equipment checked by an independent technician. When a fault appeared, I got Maya to help us test the replacement. The supplier was made to replace the damaged cables under the contract. We got the system working before the audience arrived. We have not established when the original cables were damaged, so the report does not attribute that damage to a particular person. The replacement has since passed the required checks.
