Public and the /ʌ/ Sound

Say public clearly, then practise the same vowel in everyday words.

1. Build the word: public

PUB-lic /ˈpʌb.lɪk/

  1. Two syllables. Make the first one stronger: PUB-lic.
  2. A short /ʌ/ vowel. Use the vowel in cup. Keep your lips relaxed and unrounded, with your mouth comfortably open.
  3. A short /ɪ/ at the end. The final part has the vowel in sit, not the long vowel in see.
  4. Join /b/ and /l/ smoothly. Do not insert an extra vowel between them.
Meaning: A public library or public park is for people in the community to use. Public often contrasts with private.

Make the first syllable stronger in all four words.

3. Avoid these common mistakes

  1. Not the letter name “you”. The u in public is /ʌ/, not /juː/.
  2. Not every written “u” has this sound. In this model, put /pʊt/, pull /pʊl/ and full /fʊl/ have a different vowel.
  3. Hear a useful contrast: luck /lʌk/ and look /lʊk/. Only the vowel changes. Listen, pause and repeat both.

Accent note: we practise a common British dictionary model here. Some regional English accents use a different vowel in these words; that is accent variation, not automatically an error.

4. Use it in sentences

  1. The public library is open.
  2. We take the bus to the public swimming pool.
  3. I study after lunch.
