Learn English with The Terminal
Help Me Understand
Ask for a simpler explanation, check the next step and explain why a personal goal matters.
Created by Denis M., British English teacher.
Practise English with two The Terminal scenes about a confusing situation and the personal story behind a journey. Build clarification language and practise listening with interest.
Before you start: What helps when someone explains a complicated situation in a language you are still learning?
Content note: Distress, separation, bereavement and adult relationship context. Do not imitate Viktor’s learner accent or grammar. The airport situation is fictional and must not be presented as current immigration advice. Final audience suitability depends on full exact-upload review.
An Explanation Viktor Cannot Use
Viktor has arrived at an airport. Dixon tries to explain why the situation is not the one Viktor expected.
Watch for: Which immediate question does Viktor need answered?
Clip A quiz · 6 questions
Answer using this clip only. Choose one answer per question, then check your feedback.
Useful English
Original practice, not film quotations.
Could you explain that in simpler words?
Ask for a more accessible explanation.
What do I need to do next?
Move from a confusing account to an immediate action.
Discuss this clip
What two short questions could make the immediate next step clearer?
One possible response
I would ask where I should wait and who will tell me when something changes. Those questions do not solve the whole problem, but they make the next step more usable.
The Promise Behind the Journey
Viktor explains to Amelia why a small collection matters so much to him.
Watch for: What turns the journey into something more than ordinary sightseeing?
Clip B quiz · 6 questions
Answer using this clip only. Choose one answer per question, then check your feedback.
Useful English
Original practice, not film quotations.
It may look ordinary, but it has sentimental value.
Explain why an inexpensive object matters.
I came here to complete something important to my family.
Connect a journey to a personal purpose.
Discuss this clip
How can a listener show interest without asking someone to reveal more than they want?
One possible response
Ask an open question about what the object means, listen to the answer and allow the person to decide how much to share.
Mastery quiz · Use the English in new situations
Apply the language · 6 questions
These six original practice examples apply language from both clips. They are separate from the two listening quizzes.
Final speaking
Speak aloud on your own, or discuss with a tutor. Open each model after your first attempt.
1. Compare
Compare Viktor’s position in the two conversations. What changes when the focus moves from an administrative situation to his personal purpose?
Follow-up: What does each listener need to ask rather than assume?
Model and support
In the first conversation Viktor struggles to understand what the explanation means for his next step. In the second, he has an opportunity to explain why the journey matters. The listener can understand more about him than the travel problem alone reveals.
Check your response:
- Refer to both conversations.
- Distinguish practical information from personal purpose.
- Avoid treating the fiction as real travel guidance.
2. Evaluate
What makes an object valuable beyond its price? Use an invented example or a non-private object.
Follow-up: How would you explain that value to someone who sees only the price?
Model and support
A cheap programme from a school concert could have sentimental value because it records an important shared experience. Its price may be low, but replacing the paper would not replace the memory. A listener can ask about its meaning without demanding personal details.
Check your response:
- Use sentimental value or collection.
- Give an example without pressure to disclose.
- Explain meaning clearly.
3. Put it into practice
Resolve a confusing booking problem, then explain the purpose that makes the visit important. Switch roles and repeat with clearer wording.
Visitor
You have booked a community-centre room for a musician interview at 14:00. It is part of a volunteer local-history collection. You can wait until 16:00 today or return on Friday. You want to complete the project, not gain special access to restricted areas.
Receptionist
The main room is temporarily closed. First round: offer a small room at 15:00. Retry: the small room is unavailable too; offer Friday at 14:00 or a refund. Explain the next step simply and confirm the agreed booking in writing.
Retry after the small room also becomes unavailable. Ask for a realistic alternative rather than a guarantee.
Model and support
Could you explain that in simpler words? My confirmation says today, but I understand that the room is temporarily unavailable. What do I need to do next? I came here to interview a musician for our community-history collection. If the smaller room is available at three, that would let us complete the interview. Could you confirm that time in writing?
Check your response:
- Request a simpler explanation.
- Check a concrete next step.
- Explain the personal or project purpose without copying Viktor’s learner English.
Listen and repeat
Practice examples are original English, not quotations or performer imitations. Listen, repeat in the pause, then make your own sentence.
