Before you start
Compare Noor said that Maya had promised to send the file with Maya sent the file. How much meaning disappears in that shortcut?
Useful background: Reported Speech 1 and 2; perfect aspect, reporting verbs and deictic expressions.
Keep each reporting layer visible
A report can contain another person’s report or commitment. The outer speaker is responsible for the outer assertion; the embedded content remains attributed to the relevant source. Removing a layer can strengthen the apparent evidence.
Noor said that Maya had promised to send the file.
The note records Noor’s account of Maya’s promise.

Anchor time to the right viewpoint
Yesterday, tomorrow, here and now are interpreted from a speaker’s perspective. A later report may need explicit day names or a changed expression. Do not change words mechanically when the original reference still applies.
On Tuesday, Maya said she would send it the next day.
In Thursday’s report, that promised day was Wednesday.
Keep three dates and two reporting roles apart
Tomorrow in Maya’s Tuesday statement refers to Wednesday, not Friday after Noor’s report.
Preserve action status and uncertainty
Promising, intending, saying and completing are different events. Backshift does not itself verify the embedded proposition. Retaining a present form can be appropriate for something still presented as current, but it must not erase uncertainty or source attribution.
Noor reported the promise; she did not confirm delivery.
Maya says the room is available, but we have not checked with the organiser.

Guided practice
Say or write your answer first. Compare the meaning and form; the model is one possible answer.
1. Report Tuesday’s statement I’ll send it tomorrow from a Thursday viewpoint, naming the intended day.
Compare a model and explanation
On Tuesday, Maya said she would send it on Wednesday.
Tomorrow is interpreted relative to the original Tuesday statement.
2. Add an outer source: Noor told us that Maya made the Tuesday promise.
Compare a model and explanation
Noor told us that Maya had promised on Tuesday to send the file on Wednesday.
The outer report and embedded promise remain distinct.
3. Identify the distortion in Noor sent the file on Wednesday when the source only records her report of Maya’s promise.
Compare a model and explanation
It changes the actor, removes two reporting layers and invents completed delivery.
Compactness does not justify changing evidence or action status.
4. Explain why would send in a past report does not prove the file was sent.
Compare a model and explanation
It locates a future action from a past viewpoint or reports a commitment; fulfilment requires separate evidence.
Future-in-the-past is not completed-action evidence.
5. Use an explicit place instead of here when reporting from outside the studio.
Compare a model and explanation
Maya said the folder was in the studio.
A named location prevents the reporter’s here being mistaken for the original speaker’s here.
6. Give a current-relevance report without obligatory backshift: Maya says The room is available.
Compare a model and explanation
Maya says the room is available.
The present reporting verb and current claim support the present form, while attribution remains.
7. Read the dossier. Write the shortest clear account you can that preserves all three days and the unconfirmed result.
Compare a model and explanation
On Thursday, Noor reported Maya’s Tuesday promise to send the file on Wednesday; delivery remained unconfirmed.
Dense phrasing is acceptable when it preserves source, time and action status.
8. Compare Maya said the room was available and Maya said the room is available without declaring one always wrong.
Compare a model and explanation
Was can reflect backshift or a past availability context. Is can present availability as still current in an appropriate context. Neither form independently proves the room is available.
Interpretation depends on the time frame and reporting stance, not a mechanical tense rule.
A short conversation
Listen first if you can, then open the transcript when useful.
Open the conversation transcript
A: Did Noor send the file on Wednesday?
B: The note doesn’t say that. On Thursday, Noor reported Maya’s Tuesday promise to send it on Wednesday.
A: So the promise was fulfilled?
B: That hasn’t been confirmed. We know about the reported commitment, not the delivery.
Listening checks
Listen to each extract or open its transcript. These three questions have their own score.
Mastery quiz
Choose the best answer in each situation. Your score is out of eight.
Use it in your own words
Speaking task 1
Give a careful oral handover from the correspondence dossier, then a one-sentence written version.
Reveal a possible response
On Thursday, Noor told us about a promise Maya had made on Tuesday. Maya intended to send the file on Wednesday, but the record doesn’t confirm delivery. In writing: Noor’s Thursday report records Maya’s Tuesday promise of Wednesday delivery, which remains unconfirmed.
Success check: Keep all source and time layers without treating a commitment as completion.
Speaking task 2
Repair three misunderstandings from a listener: the wrong sender, the wrong day and assumed fulfilment.
Reveal a possible response
Noor is the reporter, not the promised sender. Wednesday was the intended sending day, not the day of Noor’s report. And the promise’s fulfilment hasn’t been established.
Success check: Correct only what is wrong and leave genuine unknowns unresolved.
Speaking task 3
Explain why mechanical changes from tomorrow to the next day or is to was can still produce an inaccurate report.
Reveal a possible response
The expressions need a clear reference point. The next day could attach to the wrong event if several days are mentioned, and backshift does not remove the need to preserve a claim’s source or current relevance.
Success check: Discuss reference and evidence, not just tense conversion rules.
