Echoes from the Void
A strange encounter. What would you do next?
Follow a space adventure, notice the important encounters and explain how you would respond to the unknown. Practise retelling events and distinguishing a possibility from a certainty.
Created by Denis M., British English teacher.
Your goal: Give a clear short account of a story and explain a cautious or adventurous decision with a reason.
Start speaking · 20 seconds
You receive an unfamiliar message during an expedition. What would you want to know before responding? Give one question.
How to use this lesson
Watch each clip, then try its activities.
Content note: This is original science fiction, not a report of real discoveries. Names of real people or astronomical objects, where used, belong to the fictional narrative in this activity.
Before you watch
Listen to the existing story, The Comet Vanguard. Follow the people aboard the Liberty Belle and the unfamiliar things they encounter. Keep brief notes rather than trying to remember every name or technical detail.

The team waited for a signal before moving forward.
- a discovery

Their discovery raised more questions than it answered.

-
verb phrase
Do something even though the result could be harmful or unsuccessful.
We decided not to take a risk until we understood the situation.
These words help you discuss the story. They are not a checklist of exact expressions from the recording. Listening support: keep a note of the ship, the important objects, the message and Elena’s action. These categories will help you follow the story without writing a full transcript.
Predict: From the title, do you expect an ordinary journey or an unexpected encounter? Give one reason, then test your prediction.
Watch the video
First watch: what moves the story beyond an ordinary space journey? For the quiz, notice who or what is involved in each important encounter.

Replay where useful. Adjust the playback speed if the player supports it. Use captions only if available; they may be inaccurate.

Useful English · Retell events; leave room for uncertainty
Use at first and then to organise events. Use might or could for an interpretation you are not certain about. When you suggest a new decision or ending, make clear that it is your idea rather than part of the original story.
At first, everything seems normal.
Then the crew receives a signal.
It might be a warning, but we cannot be certain.
I would ask for more information before taking a risk.
Keep talking · Choose one
Choose one prompt. Speak for 45–60 seconds. Use the video for story facts and clearly label your own suggestions.
- Retell the story in four or five sentences. Introduce the situation, explain an important encounter and say what happens by the end.
- Imagine you are on an expedition and receive a message from an unknown source. Would you respond immediately, ask questions or wait? Explain one possible benefit and one risk.
- Choose one decision or moment from the video. Suggest a different action or ending, and explain how it would change the story. Begin, “In my version…”
One possible response to prompt 2 , an invented situation, not a plot summary
I would not ignore the message, because it might contain useful information. However, I would ask who sent it and what they wanted before sharing anything important. The possible benefit is making contact; the risk is misunderstanding the situation. I would choose a small, reversible first step.
Tutor or partner: say, “Waiting could mean losing the opportunity.” Respond with a reason for acting now or for checking first. Alone, answer that objection in one extra sentence.
Check yourself: Did I organise my answer, separate story facts from my own ideas and use might or could where I was uncertain?
Listen and repeat · Optional
Play a word or expression, pause and repeat. Then change one detail to make an expression your own. These are original practice recordings, not extracted film dialogue.
