No, Not and None: Say What Is Missing
Give a clear update when something is unavailable or unfinished.
By the end: Choose no before a noun, not in a negative clause and none for a quantity already understood.
Tutor guide: Let the learner try first. Use the short follow-up questions and ask them to explain one quiz choice. Extra discussion is optional.
The quick answer
Compare We have no tickets, We are not ready and How many tickets are left? None. The meaning is negative in each case, but the grammatical job is different.
You are helping at a small film evening. Give clear updates about tickets, equipment and refreshments. The examples are fictional; use your own event for the speaking tasks.
On your own: Read each explanation, answer the short speaking prompt aloud (or write if needed), then reveal the model and improve your answer. Finish with the quiz and final task.
The extra-detail panels are optional. Keep the main route to about 15 minutes; take longer if the discussion is useful.
1. No introduces a noun
Name what is missing
There are no tickets left.
No comes directly before the noun phrase. It can introduce a singular noun, a plural noun or an uncountable noun: no screen, no tickets, no milk.
Use a negative verb instead
We do not have any tickets left.
For this quantity meaning, not any is an alternative to no. The negative word moves into the verb phrase.
One negative pattern: use We have no tickets or We do not have any tickets. For ordinary standard English, do not combine them as We do not have no tickets.
The double-negative pattern occurs in some dialects and songs. Here, practise the standard pattern used in most study and workplace writing.
2. Not makes the clause negative
| Meaning | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A state | be + not | The room is not ready. |
| A possibility | modal + not | We cannot start yet. |
| An ordinary present-tense verb | do/does + not + base verb | The projector does not work. |
| Zero quantity before a noun | no + noun | We have no spare cable. |
Contractions are natural in conversation: is not → isn’t, does not → doesn’t. After doesn’t, keep the base verb: It doesn’t work, not It doesn’t works.
Before the adjective ready, use not: We are not ready. Before the noun tickets, use no: We have no tickets. Do not choose only from the meaning; look at the structure.
3. None avoids repeating a known quantity
Answer how many or how much
How many spare cables do we have? None.
The question supplies the missing noun. None means not one or not any of the quantity under discussion.
Identify the group or amount
None of these cables work.
Use none of before a determiner such as the, these or my, or an object pronoun: none of them. Do not put none directly before cables.
A useful contrast: No cables work names the category; None of these cables work refers to this particular set. There is no milk names the substance; None of the milk is fresh refers to a known amount.
With a plural set, both singular and plural agreement can be correct: None of the tickets is available and None of the tickets are available. With an uncountable amount, use singular agreement: None of the milk is fresh. This quiz does not treat either plural-set pattern as an error.
Repair two messages
Say or write a corrected version first. Then open the explanation.
1. The room is no ready.
Show the correction and reason
The room is not ready.
Ready is an adjective. Use not after is to make this clause negative.
2. None these cables work.
Show the correction and reason
None of these cables work.
Keep of before these cables. None of them work is another way to refer to the same set.
Mastery quiz: eight exercises with answers
Choose one best answer for each situation. Work without the table first, then check your answers. Each choice has its own explanation.
Answer key with explanations
no Correct. No introduces the plural noun tickets.
not Correct. Not makes is ready negative.
None. Correct. The question supplies the noun, so none can stand alone.
We do not have any juice. Correct. Use not with any for zero quantity here.
None of Correct. None of introduces this particular set.
work Correct. Does carries the present-tense marking.
is Correct. Milk is uncountable here, so use is.
none of them Correct. Use none of with the object pronoun them.
This checks your understanding of this lesson. It does not assign an overall English level.
Use it without the model
Give a three-sentence update for your own event. Name something missing with no, say what is not ready and describe a particular unavailable group with none of. Try before opening the model.
Compare a possible response
We have no coffee. The kitchen is not ready. None of these cups are clean.
Self-check: Does no introduce a noun? Is not in the verb phrase? Does none of refer to a known group?
If a choice still feels uncertain, revisit the explanation and try a new example.
