A busy week in the sky
What happened after the flights?
1NASA reported a busy week for its X-59 test plane on 2 October. The aircraft completed six flights in one week. This was a new weekly record for this plane.
2The X-59 flew twice on 22 September. It flew twice again on 24 September and twice on 25 September. Before that week, its best weekly total was four flights. After the six new flights, it had completed 38 test flights in all.
3During one flight, the plane reached a new top speed of about 1,010 miles per hour. The team was testing how it moved at different speeds and heights. These tests help researchers understand the aircraft before later stages of the project.
4After the busy week, the plane entered a planned maintenance period. Maintenance means checking and looking after a machine. NASA said this period would last about three weeks. The team planned another systems check before returning to flight tests.
5A record does not mean that testing is finished. The report describes one step in a longer research programme. Its future plans were plans when the report was published, not a promise about flights today.
