Looking closely at Pa 30

Why does the picture look like fireworks?

1On 6 October, NOIRLab shared a new, detailed picture of Pa 30. This object is in space. Long lines spread out from its centre, so the picture looks like fireworks. However, it does not show a celebration.

2Researchers used the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii to study the object. The telescope helps them see details that are difficult to see in older pictures. The lines are not smooth. They contain many small knots of gas, like beads along a string.

3Scientists think Pa 30 is what remains after a star explosion seen in 1181. Historical records from China, Japan and the Arabic world describe a new light in the sky. It remained visible for 185 days. Researchers consider Pa 30 a likely match for that old event.

4There is still a very hot star near the centre. Its position gives researchers information about the explosion. The new picture helps scientists ask better questions about what happened. It is evidence from a telescope, but some parts of the story remain uncertain.
