Your goal: explain the purpose of a design with to + verb. Notice the difference between a test and a proven result.

Making room for science

What problem could a shared fuel tank help solve?

1Engineers at NASA have finished a series of ground tests on a spacecraft about the size of a large shoebox. In a report published on 25 September, the agency described a design that could make better use of the limited space inside small satellites.

2Spacecraft often need different ways to move. One engine can produce a strong push for quick changes. Another can provide a smaller push for slower, efficient movements. Separate systems usually need extra tanks and pipes, which add weight and take up room.

3The new spacecraft uses one fuel tank to supply two types of engine. NASA says this arrangement could leave more space for scientific instruments. The fuel is called ASCENT. The mission is designed to test whether the combined system works in space.

4Before that can happen, engineers must check the hardware carefully. They tested for leaks, exposed it to changing temperatures in a vacuum chamber, and checked its balance with a spin test.

5The ground tests are complete, but they do not prove that the whole mission will succeed. The next steps include final checks and fitting solar panels. A successful demonstration could help future spacecraft carry more useful equipment.

1. What is different about the fuel arrangement?

Useful English: explain a purpose

Use to + verb to explain why you do something: I carry a small bag to save space. Compare a reason: I carry it because it is light.

Speak for 30 seconds

Name something you use and explain its purpose with to.

Model and help

Model: I use a calendar to remember appointments.

Alone: give another example. Tutor: ask Why is that useful?

Speak: improve an everyday object

Choose an everyday object. Suggest one small improvement and explain its purpose. Speak for 45 seconds.

Labelled model answer

I would put a small light inside my bag to find my keys more easily. I would test it in a dark room to see whether it helped. It should be simple and light.

Alone: repeat with one clearer purpose. Tutor: ask How would you test your idea?
