Testing a vehicle for the Moon
Rover designs connect wheels, people and scientific tools.

More than four wheels
Why do engineers test a model before a real mission?
1A vehicle for the Moon needs more than wheels. It must work with scientific tools, difficult ground and, for some designs, astronauts. In an update published on 20 October, NASA explains how rover development brings these needs together.
2The report discusses both robotic vehicles and vehicles for people. Robotic rovers can help researchers learn about the surface and its resources. Vehicles designed for astronauts can help them travel and carry samples and tools. These are different jobs, so testing must consider how each vehicle will be used.
3NASA describes evaluations of models from Astrolab and Lunar Outpost. Astronauts wore spacesuit models during the Astrolab work. In the Lunar Outpost evaluation, they wore pressurised spacesuits. The teams examined matters such as the design, controls and comfort. A model can help reveal a practical problem before a vehicle is used on the Moon.
4Our archive photograph shows engineers working on VIPER, a different robotic rover mentioned in the update. It was taken in February 2024. It does not show the newly reported crewed vehicle evaluations. Imagine using a control while wearing thick gloves. What would make the control easy to use?
