Mars rocks rewrite a watery history
Rover observations challenge an initial explanation of an ancient landscape.

A sequence without a timetable
What did the evidence change, and what remains unresolved?
1NASA reported on 21 September that rocks in the Margin Unit of Mars’ Jezero Crater record a more complicated water history than researchers initially anticipated. Orbital observations had suggested that carbonates there were associated with an ancient lake. Close inspection by Perseverance instead revealed igneous rocks, formed from molten material.
2The team’s interpretation identifies at least three encounters with water. Groundwater first altered the rocks; a subsequent episode may have involved the lake. Later mineral veins point to a heated underground-water event. Crucially, the researchers can establish the sequence of these interactions, but not their ages.
3This distinction matters when reconstructing an unfamiliar landscape. Knowing that one alteration preceded another is not equivalent to knowing how long either lasted, or how much time separated them. A defensible account must preserve that gap rather than fill it with an apparently precise chronology.
4The result also illustrates why an initial hypothesis need not survive closer observation. Evidence gathered from orbit provided a starting point; measurements on the ground required a revised explanation. For readers, the useful question is not whether scientists changed their minds, but whether the change follows the evidence and makes its remaining uncertainties explicit.

Useful English: Not until
Fronting Not until emphasises a turning point. Invert the auxiliary and subject in the main clause.
Illustrative example: Not until new evidence emerged did the team revise its view.
Use the base form after did: revise, not revised. The clause after until retains ordinary word order.
Describe a moment when new information changed your opinion. Start: Not until … did I …
Model and follow-up
Model: Not until I saw the full timetable did I understand the delay.
Solo: say it again in ordinary word order. Tutor: ask what the emphasis adds.
Speak: when should we change our minds?
In 45 seconds, explain one reason to revise an interpretation and one uncertainty that a responsible explanation should retain.
Labelled model response
A closer observation can undermine an attractive first explanation. I would revise the account if the new evidence fits better, but I would avoid supplying dates that have not been established. Precision in language should reflect precision in the evidence.
This is a model for discussion, not a research quotation.
Solo: add a counterargument. Tutor: ask whether acknowledging uncertainty can increase trust.
