Clues in a small sample

What can a small object tell us about a big place?

1Where did the two moons of Mars come from? Scientists do not yet have a final answer. A NASA report published on 15 October describes how a Japanese mission called MMX aims to find new clues.

2One idea is that a large object hit Mars long ago. Material from the impact may have formed the moons. Another idea is that the moons were once asteroids. Mars may have caught them with its gravity. These are possible explanations, not two proven stories.

3The mission plans to study both moons, Phobos and Deimos. It also aims to bring a sample from Phobos back to Earth. A sample is a small amount of material that researchers examine to learn more about something.

4NASA is contributing a science instrument and a sampling device. The instrument will help researchers study what Phobos is made of. The device is designed to collect surface material using short bursts of gas. By studying the material, scientists hope to understand the moons’ history better. The archive photograph shows Phobos in 2008. This lesson explains the research purpose, not the mission’s changing launch timetable.
