Why is this telescope a test unit?
1NASA reported a new step for the LISA space mission on 8 October 2026. A company called L3Harris will design and build a new test telescope for NASA. Engineers will use it before making the telescopes that will fly in space.
2LISA is a European-led mission with NASA support. Its planned launch is in the middle of the 2030s. Three spacecraft will work together. Their telescopes will send and receive laser light to measure very small changes in distance. These measurements will help scientists study gravitational waves, which are ripples in space-time.
3The telescope will use a special glass-ceramic material. This material keeps its shape across a wide range of temperatures. That is useful when measurements need to be very exact.
4The team already tested an earlier prototype. The new unit will use what engineers learned from those tests. It is another step towards the space equipment, not a telescope already flying on the mission. Testing on Earth helps the team prepare for later work.
