A useful final journey

Why put experiments inside a cargo spacecraft?

1NASA reported a heat-shield experiment on 9 October 2026. A heat shield protects a spacecraft from very high temperatures. Researchers want to learn how new materials could protect future missions.

2The experiment uses twelve small capsules inside a cargo spacecraft called Cygnus XL. Before the spacecraft left the space station, astronauts packed it with waste and switched on the capsules. The cargo spacecraft’s final journey gives the experiments a useful ride.

3The capsules have sensors to measure conditions during the return through Earth’s atmosphere. The sensors will collect information such as temperature and pressure. Researchers plan to receive the information by satellite signals. They can use it to study how the protective materials behave.

4The tests include different materials and shapes. One capsule has a heat shield made with a 3D printer. Other experiments try different ways to protect equipment.

5The report explains what the experiments are designed to do. It does not give a final successful result for every material. A small test can provide useful information before engineers choose equipment for a larger mission.

1. What does a heat shield do?

2. How many capsules are in the experiment?

3. What is one purpose of the sensors?

Useful English: to explain purpose

We use sensors to measure temperature. To + base verb answers why: I use a map to find a street. The map sentence is an illustrative learning example.

Speak for 20 seconds

Name two things you use. Explain their purpose with to plus a verb.

Model and help

Model: I use a calendar to remember meetings. I use a bag to carry my books.

Speak: your ideas

Name two things you use. Explain their purpose with to plus a verb. Speak for 30-45 seconds.

Labelled model answer

I use a calendar to remember meetings. I use a bag to carry my books.

This is an illustrative learning example, not a news quotation.

Alone: repeat without the model. Tutor: ask one follow-up question.
