Canadian fields change colour with the seasons
Two satellite pictures show summer and autumn in a river valley.

Your goal: practise contrasts with but.
Green fields, brown fields
Why does NASA compare two dates?
1A new NASA report shows how Canadian farmland changed during 2026. Published on 1 October, it compares two satellite pictures of the Carrot River Valley in Manitoba. The pictures were taken on 2 July and 21 September.
2The area is near the town of The Pas. There are fields with straight edges, but around them there are rivers, lakes and wet areas of land. Much of the wider river delta is too wet for large farms. The fields look like an island among the wetlands.
3In July, many fields were green. By September, many were brown as the area moved towards harvest time. Farmers gather their crops at harvest. The photographs show different points in the growing season, rather than the same day.
4Water is important here. Wet conditions can make planting difficult, but good soil and long summer days can help crops grow quickly. Farmers also need protection from floods. The report explains that farming still depends on walls that hold back water and on pumps. Comparing pictures helps us notice both the fields and their surroundings.
