Learning from light

Does finding water mean finding life?

1A NASA report published on 8 October 2026 describes new research using the SPHEREx space telescope. Scientists studied thirty-seven nearby brown dwarfs, unusual objects that share some features with stars and giant planets.

2Brown dwarfs form from clouds of gas, but they do not have enough mass to keep the hydrogen-fusion process of an ordinary star going. Their faint light still carries information about their atmospheres.

3SPHEREx measures light in many different colours, including infrared light that human eyes cannot see. Researchers examine patterns in that light to identify chemicals. The study found evidence of substances including water and methane.

4The results also show why scientists need observations as well as computer models. Models describe general changes, but some cloudy stages are harder to explain. Objects at similar temperatures can have different patterns of light.

5These measurements may help researchers improve their explanations. However, detecting water is not the same as detecting life. The report concerns atmospheric chemistry, not a discovery of living things. Readers should separate what the instruments measured from the larger claims they might be tempted to make.

Check your reading · Three questions

Choose one answer for every question, then check. You can change an answer and check again.

1. What did the researchers study?

2. How can light help identify chemicals?

3. Which conclusion goes beyond the report?

Useful English: may and evidence

Use may + base verb for a possible conclusion: A quieter room may help me concentrate. Explain the evidence and its limit. This is an illustrative learning example.

Speak for 20 seconds

Describe a change that may help you study. Give one reason and explain why the result is not certain.

Model and help

Model: A quieter room may help me concentrate because there are fewer distractions. However, I still need to plan my work.

Speak: your ideas

Describe a change that may help you study. Give one reason and explain why the result is not certain. Speak for 30-45 seconds.

Labelled model answer

A quieter room may help me concentrate because there are fewer distractions. However, I still need to plan my work.

This is an illustrative learning example, not a news quotation.

Alone: repeat without the model. Tutor: ask one follow-up question.
