Advanced English is not always stronger English. It is language that makes the strength, source and limits of a claim unmistakably clear. Learn to sound confident when the evidence is strong, and appropriately cautious when it is not.

The principle of calibrated language

Why good hedging is precise rather than vague.

Imagine that a company introduces a four-day working week. Three months later, employees report higher productivity. A weak writer may announce, “The four-day week proves that shorter hours increase productivity.” The sentence sounds confident, but the evidence does not justify the certainty. The result is self-reported, the period is short, and there is no comparison group.

A more accurate claim would be: “The survey results suggest that the four-day week may have improved perceived productivity.” The grammar now shows three limits. Suggest describes the evidence cautiously. May have improved leaves room for other explanations. Perceived productivity identifies what was actually measured.

This is the central principle of hedging: match the strength of your language to the strength of your evidence. Hedging is not an apology, and it is not a way to avoid having an opinion. It allows a reader to distinguish what is known, what is inferred and what remains possible.

Strong evidence can support strong language. If a definition, calculation or direct observation establishes a point, cautious wording may be unnecessary. But when a claim depends on limited data, interpretation or prediction, expressions such as appears to, is likely to, may and the findings suggest make the reasoning more honest.

Advanced control also means avoiding unnecessary piles of caution. “It could perhaps possibly suggest that…” is not more sophisticated. Choose one or two signals that express different limits, and make each one earn its place.

The certainty ladder

Compare five versions of one claim and identify the best evidence match.

Listen to the same basic idea at five different strengths.

One. Remote work increases productivity.

Two. Remote work is highly likely to increase productivity.

Three. Remote work tends to increase productivity.

Four. The findings suggest that remote work may increase productivity.

Five. One possible interpretation is that remote work could contribute to higher productivity.

These sentences are not interchangeable. The first presents a general causal fact. The second makes a strong prediction. The third describes a recurring tendency. The fourth cautiously interprets findings. The fifth presents one possible explanation and does not claim that remote work is the only cause.

If you only have a small observational survey, the fourth or fifth version is usually more defensible. If several well-designed studies show a consistent causal effect, a stronger version may be justified. Grammar should reveal that difference.

Here is your evidence. A technology company surveyed two hundred employees before and three months after introducing a four-day working week. Seventy-one per cent said they felt more productive after the change. Absence fell slightly. However, the company did not measure completed work, use a control group or separate the effect of shorter hours from other changes introduced during the same period.

Now evaluate three claims.

Claim A: “The trial proves that a four-day week makes employees more productive.” This overstates both the method and the result. A survey of perceived productivity cannot prove an increase in measured output, and the design cannot isolate causation.

Claim B: “The trial may possibly suggest that a four-day week could perhaps improve productivity.” This is cautious but poorly controlled. Several hedges repeat the same uncertainty and make the sentence difficult to read.

Claim C: “The survey suggests that the four-day week may have improved employees’ perceived productivity, although the short trial and absence of a control group limit the conclusion.” This version is appropriately calibrated. It identifies the source, uses two non-duplicating hedges, specifies the measured outcome and names the main limitations.

Your goal in the evidence lab is not to make every sentence sound uncertain. It is to make every degree of certainty visible and defensible.

Hedging is evidence calibration

A hedge limits the force, certainty or range of a statement. A stance marker shows how a speaker or writer relates to the claim. The two often overlap, but a useful analysis separates three questions:

What is the claim?

Identify the proposition before changing its strength.

The new schedule improved retention.

How strong is the evidence?

Ask whether it establishes causation, association, probability or only one possible interpretation.

Retention rose after the change, but other factors also changed.

What is your commitment?

Choose grammar that tells the reader how firmly you endorse the conclusion.

The change may have contributed to improved retention.

C2 principle: do not ask, “Which hedge sounds academic?” Ask, “Exactly what limit does this expression communicate?”
Very strong

The controlled trials demonstrate that the treatment reduces recovery time.

Strong

The treatment is highly likely to reduce recovery time.

Measured

The treatment tends to reduce recovery time.

Cautious

The findings suggest that the treatment may reduce recovery time.

Open

One possible explanation is that the treatment could contribute to shorter recovery times.

The continuum is a decision aid, not a mechanical scale. May, tends to and suggests express different kinds of limitation, so context determines their exact strength.

Do not treat synonyms as interchangeable: findings may suggest an interpretation, data may indicate a pattern, and a valid calculation may demonstrate a mathematical relationship. The verb should describe what the evidence can actually do.

Scope: place the uncertainty exactly where it belongs

At C1–C2, many errors are not errors of form but errors of scope: the hedge or negative modifies the wrong part of the proposition.

Uncertain negative

The intervention may not work.

It is possible that it will fail.

Limited positive

The intervention may not work for everyone.

It may work, but not universally.

No strong evidence

The results do not necessarily imply causation.

Causation remains possible, but it is not a required conclusion.

Strong negative claim

The results necessarily do not imply causation.

This unusual wording claims that a causal implication is impossible. It is rarely what the writer intends.

Earlier appearance

The policy does not appear to have reduced costs.

The available evidence gives no clear sign of a reduction.

Possible non-event

The policy may not have reduced costs.

A reduction is uncertain; perhaps it did not occur.

Editing test: underline the exact idea that is uncertain (cause, size, frequency, source, generality or truth), then place the hedge as close to that idea as natural English allows.

Change the register, preserve the degree of certainty

Politeness hedging

Softens interpersonal force rather than the truth of a claim.

I wondered if we could revise the deadline.

Epistemic hedging

Limits certainty, evidence or generality.

The revised deadline may reduce the risk of errors.

Both are genuine hedging, but they solve different communication problems. In formal analytical writing, avoid conversational fillers such as kind of and sort of when you can name the exact limitation.

Hedging exercises: guided editing practice

Make a decision before opening each model answer. More than one revision may be possible, but the explanation states the intended evidence limit.

1. Put these claims in order from most cautious to strongest: proves / may suggest / strongly indicates / could be consistent with.

could be consistent with → may suggest → strongly indicates → proves. Exact strength still depends on context, but the movement is from compatibility, through tentative inference, to strong evidence and finally a conclusive claim.

2. A small observational study finds that people who walk more report better moods. Revise: “Walking improves mental health.”

The study found an association between walking more and reporting a better mood. Alternatively: The findings suggest that walking may be associated with better mood. Do not claim causation or replace the measured outcome mood with the broader clinical concept mental health.

3. Remove redundant caution: “It seems possible that the change may perhaps reduce delays.”

The change may reduce delays. If the source of the impression matters, The initial results suggest that the change may reduce delays uses two signals for different purposes.

4. Strengthen an unnecessarily weak verified statement: “The audited total may be €84,230.”

The audited total is €84,230. Once the figure has been verified, an epistemic hedge creates doubt without communicating a genuine limitation.

5. Explain the difference: “The treatment may not work” / “The treatment may not work for everyone.”

The first leaves open the possibility that the treatment is ineffective. The second limits its generality: it may work for some people but not universally.

6. Rewrite for a professional report: “I kind of think customer dissatisfaction is probably because the app is slow.”

Customer feedback suggests that slow app performance may be contributing to dissatisfaction. The revision names the evidence, removes vague conversational language and avoids presenting one factor as the only cause.

7. Choose the justified booster: Independent records confirm that the same invoice was paid twice.

The records clearly demonstrate that the invoice was paid twice. Here a strong verb and booster are warranted because independent records directly establish the duplication.

8. Revise the evidence-lab claim in a different way while preserving all four limits.

For example: Among the employees surveyed, perceived productivity increased after the four-day week was introduced; however, the design does not establish that the schedule caused the change. This version limits the population, identifies the measure, reports sequence rather than causation and states the design limitation.

Production task: choose a claim from a report, news article or your own writing. Write a three-sentence calibration note: (1) what the evidence directly establishes, (2) what it reasonably suggests, and (3) what it cannot establish. Then revise the original claim so its grammar preserves those boundaries.
