At eight last night, I was cooking. My sister was reading. Our friends were travelling home. These activities were in progress at that time.

Does “I was cooking at eight” tell us exactly when cooking began?

Compare your idea

No. It says the activity was in progress at eight, not when it started.

How it works

Adult woman preparing vegetables beside another woman reading an open book.
She was preparing vegetables at eight.Picture context: this scene shows eight o’clock yesterday. Was preparing describes an activity in progress then.

Use was or were plus an -ing form for an activity in progress at a past moment. I/he/she/it takes was; you/we/they takes were.

The past continuous shows the inside of an activity. It does not by itself give the starting time or say the activity continued all evening. Ask Was she reading? or Were they working?

Subject + was/were + verb-ing. At eight, I was cooking.
