Read the situation transcript
Rosa is a new student. She is twenty. Her friends are outside. Rosa says, “I am ready.”
Why do we use is with Rosa but are with her friends?
Compare your idea
Rosa is one person: she is. Her friends are more than one person: they are.
How it works

Use am with I, is with he, she or it, and are with you, we or they. Be connects a person or thing to a name, description or place.
Put not after be to make a negative. In conversation, I am becomes I’m and she is becomes she’s. Say I am twenty, not I have twenty.
I am; you/we/they are; he/she/it is. Negative: subject + be + not.
Notice this
I am a student.
This gives my role.
Compare this
Rosa is twenty.
This gives Rosa’s age.
Hear the examples

One mistake worth avoiding
Instead of: I have twenty years.
