IELTS Writing Task 1: How to Write a Clear Overview
Learn to identify the big picture and express it in two focused sentences.
What the task asks you to do
In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, an overview gives the main picture. It identifies the most important features without listing every number. A strong overview usually contains two clear sentences.
A useful two-step method
- Find the broad trend: rise, fall, stability, or fluctuation.
- Find the most noticeable comparison: highest, lowest, fastest change, or a clear contrast.
Model data
Imagine a line graph showing weekly online study hours for three groups from January to June:
- Group A rises steadily from 4 to 9 hours.
- Group B stays close to 6 hours.
- Group C falls from 8 to 5 hours.
Model overview
Overall, study time increased considerably for Group A, while Group C showed the opposite pattern. Group B remained comparatively stable throughout the period.
Language that helps
Trend verbs: rose, declined, remained stable, fluctuated.
Comparison language: whereas, while, in contrast, the highest, the lowest.
Guided practice
A chart shows car travel falling from 60% to 45%, train travel rising from 20% to 35%, and bus travel staying near 20%. Complete the overview.
Overall, travel by car __________, whereas train use __________. By contrast, the proportion travelling by bus __________.
Check the answer
Overall, travel by car declined, whereas train use increased. By contrast, the proportion travelling by bus remained stable.

Choose a chart from your study materials. Write only the overview in two sentences. Check that you describe the big picture and avoid detailed figures.
