IELTS Writing: Develop One Clear Main Idea
Build a focused body paragraph by moving from a clear claim to explanation, example and result.
Why one clear idea is stronger than several weak ideas
In IELTS writing, a body paragraph is easier to follow when it develops one controlling idea. The reader should understand your claim, why it is true, and how your example proves it.
Introduces several benefits but explains none of them.
Chooses one benefit and builds a clear chain of reasoning.
A reliable four-step paragraph
- State the main idea. Give the paragraph one clear focus.
- Explain the reason or mechanism. Show how or why the idea works.
- Add a specific example. Use a realistic situation that illustrates the explanation.
- Connect the example to the argument. Make the significance explicit.
Model paragraph
Practice question Should employers allow staff to work from home?
One major advantage of remote work is that it can protect employees’ concentration. In a busy office, frequent conversations and interruptions may break a person’s focus, particularly during complex tasks. For example, a financial analyst who prepares a detailed report at home may be able to work for a sustained period without being interrupted by unrelated questions. As a result, the employee can complete demanding work more accurately and efficiently.
Language that makes the logic visible
This is largely because…
The main reason is that…
When…, it allows…
This means that…
For example,…
A clear example of this is…
As a result,…
Consequently,…
Use linking language only when it clarifies the relationship between ideas. A paragraph does not become stronger simply because it contains more connectors.
Guided practice: build the paragraph
Put the four sentences in the most logical order.
- For example, a new employee can replay a recorded demonstration while completing the process independently.
- One benefit of video training is that employees can review difficult information.
- Consequently, staff can correct misunderstandings without repeatedly asking a colleague for help.
- This is useful because people do not always remember every stage of a complex procedure after seeing it once.
Check the answer
2 → 4 → 1 → 3. The paragraph moves from the claim to the explanation, then to the example and its result.
Improve vague support
Rewrite the vague explanation below so that it shows a clear mechanism and example.
Main idea: Public libraries are valuable because they support job seekers.
Vague support: They help people in many ways and this is good for society.
Suggested development
Many job seekers do not have reliable internet access or a quiet place to prepare applications. A library can provide computers, online resources and a suitable working environment. For example, an unemployed resident may use a library computer to adapt a CV and attend an online interview. This practical access can make the search for work more effective.
Your IELTS writing task
Choose one of the statements below and write a body paragraph of 90 to 120 words.
- Online courses can improve access to education.
- City centres should provide more spaces without cars.
Before you finish, underline your main idea, circle the sentence that explains it, and put a box around your example. Then ask: does every sentence support the same point?
