IELTS Speaking: Develop Answers with Reasons and Details
Turn short replies into natural, relevant answers without memorising a script.
What makes an answer effective?
In IELTS Speaking, a developed answer goes beyond yes or no. It answers directly, explains the idea, and adds a specific detail without sounding memorised.
Answer, Reason, Detail
Answer: respond clearly.
Reason: explain why.
Detail: add an example, contrast, time, place, or consequence.
Example question
Do you enjoy cooking?
Model: Yes, especially at weekends, because cooking helps me slow down after a busy week. I usually try one new recipe on Saturday, and recently I learned how to make fresh pasta.
Avoid two common problems
- Do not stop after one short sentence.
- Do not add unrelated information simply to make the answer longer.
Guided practice
Develop this answer with a reason and detail: “Yes, I like reading.”
Possible answer
Yes, I like reading because it helps me relax without looking at a screen. I usually read historical fiction before bed, and I finish about one novel each month.
Production task
Answer three familiar questions. Give each answer a reason and one specific detail, then listen for unnecessary repetition.
