Cambridge English Exams: Questions and Answers
Know what to expect before your Cambridge English exam, from choosing a qualification to understanding the Speaking test.
The quick answers
Register through an authorised exam centre.
The exam level and centre determine the fee.
B2, C1 and C2 paper exams: pencil for answer sheets, pen for Writing.
Usually with another candidate and two examiners. Some tasks have visible prompts.
Why should I take a Cambridge English exam?
General examples, not entry rules. Cambridge qualifications can support study, work and some visa purposes, but acceptance depends on the exact qualification and application. Ask the receiving institution or authority before booking.
When is a Cambridge English qualification a useful choice?
It can be useful when you want a recognised qualification at a clear level, such as B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, for study, a job application or a professional development goal.
Teacher’s advice: a level-based qualification can give your study a clear target even when you do not plan to emigrate. The certificate does not expire, although an institution or authority may still require recent evidence.

Which countries and situations are common examples?
- United Kingdom: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency for university courses that accept them; some courses also accept B2 First.
- Canada: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency for a college or university that lists the qualification.
- Australia: C1 Advanced for accepting universities, professional bodies or relevant visa routes.
- International work: an employer may use a B2 or C1 qualification as evidence of communication skills for an English-using role.
Choose according to the named qualification and required score, rather than assuming that “Cambridge English” always means the same exam.

Can a Cambridge qualification help with immigration or a visa?
Sometimes. Australia’s approved list includes C1 Advanced. New Zealand lists B2 First and B2 First for Schools for specified Accredited Employer Work Visa English evidence. Do not substitute a different Cambridge qualification without confirmation.
UK degree-level study may use a licensed university sponsor’s own English assessment. However, where a route specifically requires a SELT, ordinary B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency are not on that approved list. Canada’s Express Entry does not list these qualifications as approved English tests.
University acceptance and immigration acceptance are separate questions.
Official guidance: Australia: approved English language tests for visas · New Zealand: English evidence for an Accredited Employer Work Visa · Cambridge English for UK university study · UK: approved secure English language tests · Canada: approved Express Entry language tests.
What scores might a university or employer ask for?
Invented examples showing how conditions can be written, not real entry requirements:
- A job application: B2 First, overall score 170.
- A university course: C1 Advanced, overall score 185, with no individual skill below 176.
- A course requiring C2: C2 Proficiency, overall score 200 or higher.
The qualification name matters as well as the number. Do not assume that a high score in B2 First automatically substitutes for a required C1 Advanced certificate. Ask about individual skill scores and how recently you must have taken the exam.
Official guidance: Cambridge results and certificates.
What should I ask the institution or authority before booking?
Ask the organisation that will receive your result, not only the test centre. Contact the university admissions team, employer, professional regulator or immigration authority for your exact course, role or visa route.
You can ask: “Which exact test and version do you accept? Can I take it digitally or at home? What overall and individual-skill scores do I need? How recent must the result be, when must it arrive, and do you accept retakes or combined scores?”
Get the answer before paying. A country appearing in a list does not mean that every institution or visa route there accepts the same test.
Choosing, booking and paying
Which Cambridge English exam should I choose?
Choose the qualification and score your receiving organisation accepts. The main level names are A2 Key, B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency. Teacher’s advice: use a timed practice test and a teacher’s feedback to judge readiness.
Official guidance: Cambridge registration, fees and exam dates.
How do I register?
Find an authorised centre through Cambridge’s official centre search and book directly with that centre, or through your school if it handles entries. The centre confirms its offered qualifications, dates, venue, payment process and identification rules.
Official guidance: Cambridge registration, fees and exam dates.
When should I book?
Ask your centre early. Cambridge lists paper registration at approximately four weeks before the exam, and digital registration as close as two working days where offered. These are not promises of a local place. Teacher’s advice: allow several weeks and a results buffer before your deadline.
Official guidance: Paper and digital Cambridge exams.
How much does it cost?
There is no universal Cambridge exam price. Your qualification, country and centre determine the fee. Ask your chosen authorised centre for the current total, payment deadline, late-entry charges and transfer or cancellation terms.
Official guidance: Cambridge registration, fees and exam dates.
Is digital the same qualification as paper?
Yes. The qualification and task types are the same. Digital changes how you read, listen and enter answers, and results usually arrive sooner. Choose an available format you can use confidently rather than expecting a lower language standard.
Official guidance: Paper and digital Cambridge exams.
Does a digital exam mean I take it at home?
No. Cambridge English Qualifications Digital are supervised at an authorised exam centre, school or external venue. The Speaking test remains face-to-face. Your confirmation tells you where and when to attend.

Paper, computer and test-day equipment
Do I use a pen or a pencil?
For B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency on paper, bring both. Use a pencil for Reading and Use of English and Listening answer sheets, and a pen for Writing. For A2 Key or B1 Preliminary, read that exam’s own instructions instead of copying this rule automatically.
Official guidance: B2 First candidate information · C1 Advanced candidate information · C2 Proficiency candidate information.
Can I use an erasable pen or correction fluid?
No. Cambridge does not allow erasable pens, correction fluid or correction tape. In pen-written work, cross out unwanted wording clearly and write the correction legibly. Erase pencil answers properly when changing them.
Official guidance: Correction fluid, tape and erasable pens · C1 Advanced candidate information.
What is the digital exam like?
You use a computer, keyboard and mouse, with headphones for Listening. Features include a timer, a Writing word counter and tools for notes and highlighting. Try the official digital sample for your qualification before exam day.
Official guidance: Paper and digital Cambridge exams.
Can I change my answers or move between questions?
You can work through the available questions within the current test component, following the interface instructions. Do not assume you can return after that component has ended. Practice tip: use the official sample to learn its navigation before taking a timed mock.
Official guidance: B2 First candidate information.
How long are B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency?
Allow roughly 3½ hours for B2 First and 4 hours for C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency of testing, including Speaking. Check-in, breaks and a separate Speaking appointment can make your total visit longer. Your centre’s timetable controls attendance.
Official guidance: B2 First and First for Schools format · C1 Advanced exam format · C2 Proficiency exam format.
What should I bring on exam day?
Bring the accepted original photo ID and any confirmation your centre requests. For paper exams, follow its stationery list. Check your venue and reporting time, and follow the instructions for storing bags, phones and other electronic devices.
Official guidance: What to expect on digital exam day · B2 First candidate information.
Can I use a dictionary or my phone?
No dictionary, translation app or personal electronic help is part of these exam tasks. Phones must be stored as directed, and Cambridge’s digital exam instructions also restrict access during breaks. If something is unclear, ask the invigilator.

Speaking questions, partners and prompts
Who is in the Speaking test with me?
You usually take it with one other candidate and two examiners. One examiner leads the test and another assesses. Centres can use groups of three in some circumstances. You have individual speaking turns as well as interaction tasks.
Official guidance: B2 First and First for Schools format · C1 Advanced exam format · C2 Proficiency exam format.
Do I see the Speaking questions?
Some, but not all. In B2 First and C1 Advanced, Part 1 and Part 4 questions are spoken by the examiner. Part 2 has photographs with printed task questions, and Part 3 has a task with written prompts. Listen carefully: an additional decision question can be spoken.
Official guidance: B2 First and First for Schools format · C1 Advanced exam format.
Is C2 Proficiency Speaking the same as B2 and C1?
No. C2 has three parts. It includes an interview, a collaborative task with visual material and a longer individual turn based on a written card, followed by discussion. Use C2-specific samples rather than a B2 or C1 checklist.
Official guidance: C2 Proficiency exam format.
Do I have to agree with my partner?
No. Respond to their ideas, explain yours and help the conversation move forward. Teacher’s advice: practise polite disagreement and inviting a response. Trying to dominate the task gives you less opportunity to show genuine interaction.
Official guidance: B2 First and First for Schools format · C1 Advanced exam format.
What if my partner is stronger, quieter or makes a mistake?
You receive your own assessment. Focus on what you can control: clear contributions, listening and appropriate turn-taking. Teacher’s advice: invite a quieter partner to contribute, and respond to meaning rather than correcting their grammar.
Official guidance: C1 Advanced candidate information.
Can I ask the examiner to repeat something?
If you did not hear an instruction, ask politely. Do not expect translation or help deciding what to say. Teacher’s advice: practise listening for the exact task, such as comparing, speculating or reaching a decision, instead of giving a prepared description.
Official guidance: B2 First candidate information · C1 Advanced candidate information.
Results, certificates and another attempt
When will I receive the result and certificate?
Digital results are normally available in 5–10 working days; paper results usually take 4–6 weeks. The paper certificate follows later through the centre. Do not confuse receiving an online result with receiving the printed certificate.
Official guidance: Cambridge results and certificates.
What score do I need to pass?
Each qualification has its own Cambridge English Scale score ranges and grades. An organisation may demand a particular overall score or individual skill scores. Check the results page for your exact qualification and the receiving organisation’s requirement.
Official guidance: Cambridge results and certificates · B2 First and First for Schools format · C1 Advanced exam format · C2 Proficiency exam format.
Does a Cambridge English certificate expire?
The certificate does not expire. However, a university, employer or other organisation may require a recent result. Confirm its policy if you plan to use a certificate earned several years ago.
Official guidance: Cambridge results and certificates.
Can I retake just one paper?
For these Cambridge English Qualifications, you retake the whole exam rather than carrying individual papers forward. Ask your centre about a new session, the fee and any date restrictions. A results enquiry is a separate process from taking the exam again.
Official guidance: Current Cambridge English exam regulations.
