Articles: A, An, The or No Article?
Articles are tiny words with a big job: they tell your listener whether a noun is general, one of many, or already known. Learn a reliable way to choose a, an, the—or nothing at all.

The essential rules
A / an: one, not known yet
Use a or an with one singular countable noun when it is not yet specific. Choose by sound: an before a vowel sound.
I saw a dog. She is an engineer. He studies at a university.
The: the listener can identify it
Use the when both people know which noun you mean, after the first mention, or for something unique.
I saw a dog. The dog followed me. Please close the door.
No article: things in general
Use no article with plural or uncountable nouns when speaking generally, and with most languages, meals and subjects.
Ø Dogs need exercise. We speak Ø Spanish. Lunch is at one.

Three mistakes to avoid
Choose by sound: university begins with /y/.
General uncountable nouns normally take no article.
A singular countable noun needs a determiner.
