Articles are tiny words with a big job: they tell your listener whether a noun is general, one of many, or already known. Learn a reliable way to choose a, an, the: or nothing at all.

A / an: one, not known yet
Use a or an with one singular countable noun when it is not yet specific. Choose by sound: an before a vowel sound.

There is a café next to our school. The café has a blue door. We first introduce one café, then refer to the same café.
a university starts with a consonant /j/ sound, like “you”. an hour starts with a vowel sound because h is silent.
