The essential rules
A / an: one, not known yet
Use a or an with one singular countable noun when it is not yet specific. Choose by sound: an before a vowel sound.
I saw a dog. She is an engineer. He studies at a university.The: the listener can identify it
Use the when both people know which noun you mean, after the first mention, or for something unique.

Use no article with plural or uncountable nouns when speaking generally, and with most languages, meals and subjects.
