Although, Despite and In Spite Of

Show the contrast. Keep the pattern clear.

By the end: Explain a surprising result and connect contrasting ideas in speech and writing.

I’m studying:

The quick answer

Use although / even though + subject + verb: Although the room was small, it felt welcoming. Use despite / in spite of + noun, pronoun or -ing form: Despite its size, it felt welcoming. These patterns connect facts that contrast with an expectation.

A reading group is choosing a café. One café is small but quiet; another is beautiful but noisy. A useful recommendation needs to acknowledge a drawback and still explain your choice.

On your own: Read each explanation, answer the short speaking prompt aloud (or write if needed), then reveal the model and improve your answer. Finish with the quiz and final task.

The extra-detail panels are optional. Keep the main route to about 17 minutes; take longer if the discussion is useful.

1. Explain a surprising contrast

A full clause

Although the café was busy, we found a quiet table.

Busy makes a quiet table less expected. In this full-clause pattern, include the subject and verb: the café was.

A stronger contrast

Even though it was raining, we sat outside.

Even though often makes the unexpected contrast stronger. The rain is treated as a fact in this sentence.

Do not double the link: choose “Although it was expensive, we booked it” or “It was expensive, but we booked it”. Avoid Although it was expensive, but we booked it.

2. Change the structure after despite and in spite of

Keep the idea; change what follows
MeaningPatternExample
Subject + verbalthough / even though + clauseAlthough the café was noisy, we stayed.
A noun phrasedespite / in spite of + noun phraseDespite the noise, we stayed.
An -ing phrasedespite / in spite of + -ingIn spite of feeling tired, we stayed.
A full clause after factdespite / in spite of the fact that + clauseDespite the fact that it was noisy, we stayed.

Despite has no of. In spite of needs all three words. In the -ing example, we were tired. Make the person doing or experiencing the action clear.

Change a different subject carefully

“Although the café was closing, we stayed” cannot simply become “Despite closing, we stayed”: that makes we appear to be closing. Keep a clear subject: Despite the fact that the café was closing, we stayed.

3. Choose the meaning, position and punctuation

A fact: even though

Even though it is raining, the walk is going ahead.

The speaker presents the rain as real.

A possible condition: even if

Even if it rains, the walk will go ahead.

Rain is a possibility. The decision will stay the same if it happens.

Put a comma after a contrast clause that comes first: Although it was crowded, we stayed. When it comes second, a comma is often unnecessary: We stayed although it was crowded.

Use though naturally in conversation

Though can introduce a contrast clause like although. It can also come at the end of a conversational sentence: The café is expensive. The coffee is excellent, though. Although does not normally take that final position.

Try before revealing

Repair two messages

Say or write a corrected version first. Then open the explanation.

1. “Despite of the long queue, we waited.”

Show the correction and reason

Despite the long queue, we waited.

Despite takes the noun phrase directly. The alternative is in spite of the long queue.

2. “Although the tickets were expensive, but we bought them.”

Show the correction and reason

Although the tickets were expensive, we bought them.

Use although or but to link this contrast, not both together. Another correct version is: The tickets were expensive, but we bought them.

Meaning + form + real use

Mastery quiz: eight exercises with answers

Choose one best answer for each situation. Work without the table first, then check your answers. Each choice has its own explanation.

1. “___ it was getting late, we continued the conversation.”
2. Choose the correct sentence.
3. “In spite of ___ tired, I stayed until the end.”
4. It is definitely snowing now, but the match is continuing. Choose the clearest fact-based link.
5. Choose the sentence that links the contrast without an unnecessary second conjunction.
6. “Although the train was late, I arrived on time.” Which version preserves both subjects clearly?
7. Which conversational ending is natural? “The service is slow. The food is excellent, ___.”
8. “Even if the price rises, I will renew.” What does the speaker mean?
Answer key with explanations
  1. Although Although is followed by a subject and verb, so it fits this clause.

  2. Despite the rain, we walked. Despite correctly introduces the noun phrase the rain.

  3. feeling Feeling is the -ing form, and I is clearly the person who felt tired.

  4. Even though it is snowing, the match is continuing. Even though presents the snow as a fact and highlights the unexpected continuation.

  5. Although it was noisy, we stayed. The although clause and main clause form a complete contrast.

  6. Despite the fact that the train was late, I arrived on time. The fact that allows the full clause and keeps the train as the thing that was late.

  7. though Though naturally adds a contrast at the end of a conversational sentence.

  8. A possible price rise will not change the decision to renew. Even if introduces a condition that does not change the stated decision.

This checks your understanding of this lesson. It does not assign an overall English level.

Make it yours · about 45 seconds

Use it without the model

Recommend a place, product or activity in 45 seconds. Include one although clause, one despite phrase and one even if condition. Keep the recommendation believable.

Compare a possible response

Although the bookshop is small, I recommend it. Despite its limited space, it has a thoughtful selection. Even if I have to wait for a seat, I will visit the café there again.

Self-check: Check the words after each link. Use even if for a possibility, and make sure the drawbacks genuinely contrast with the recommendation.

If a choice still feels uncertain, revisit the explanation and try a new example.
