Discuss salary with evidence, confidence and enough flexibility to continue a constructive negotiation.
Why employers ask about salary expectations
The question helps an employer check whether expectations, responsibilities and budget are reasonably aligned. A strong answer is calm, informed and flexible. It does not apologise for discussing money or make an unsupported demand.
Prepare three points
- Your researched market range.
- The value and experience you bring.
- The wider package you would consider, such as responsibilities, development and benefits.
Use a flexible response structure
Context: show that you understand the role. Range: offer a realistic range when appropriate. Flexibility: invite discussion about the complete package.
Based on the responsibilities we have discussed and my experience managing international client projects, I would expect a salary in the region of 4,000 to 4,500 per month. I am open to discussing the complete package and learning more about the progression opportunities attached to the role.

Weak answer: I do not know. I just want a fair salary, but obviously more would be better.
Rewrite it to include role context, a researched range and an invitation to continue the discussion.
Suggested answer
Based on similar positions and the project responsibilities described today, I would expect a range of 3,200 to 3,600 per month. I am flexible and would like to consider the complete package, including development opportunities and the final scope of the role.
