Interview Answers with the STAR Method

Turn real experience into a concise, convincing interview story.

Why employers ask this

Behavioural questions ask for evidence from a real situation. A structured story helps the interviewer understand what happened, what you did, and what changed.

The STAR structure

Situation: give essential context.

Task: explain your responsibility.

Action: describe the steps you personally took.

Result: explain the outcome and what you learned.

Question

Tell me about a time you solved a difficult problem.

In my previous role, our team received repeated customer complaints about delayed updates. I was responsible for improving communication. I created a simple tracking sheet and introduced a daily five-minute review. Within several weeks, customers received clearer updates and the team spent less time searching for information.

Useful language

  • The situation was…
  • My responsibility was to…
  • I decided to…
  • As a result…

Practice

Which STAR section should contain the most detail? Situation, Action, or Result?

Answer

Action. The interviewer needs clear evidence of what you personally did.

Production task

Prepare one STAR answer about teamwork, problem solving, or handling pressure. Practise it aloud without memorising every sentence.
