Italian Subject Pronouns and Essere

By the end, you can identify yourself and other people with the natural Italian pattern—not a word-for-word copy of English.

Notice the pattern

Subject pronouns are usually optional because the present form of essere already marks the person. Use a pronoun when you need contrast or extra clarity.

A profession after essere normally has no indefinite article. Identity nouns and adjectives may change for gender and number.

Build identity sentences

Read each model aloud, then replace the identity word with one that is true for you or someone you know.

  2. Copy the second-row model, then replace its identity word with one that is true.
  3. Change the first-row idea to the we model in row four.
