Build a Clear Cause-and-Effect Argument
Connect a claim to a logical result. Use a short reasoning chain, a relevant example and precise linking language to make an academic response easy to follow.
1. Why a clear chain matters
A strong opinion is not enough. Readers need to see how one situation produces another. Compare these two responses.
Claim only
Universities should offer more group projects because teamwork is useful.
Developed reasoning
Universities should offer more group projects because students must divide responsibilities and explain decisions. As a result, they practise the coordination skills required in many workplaces.
The second response explains the mechanism between the educational choice and the professional benefit.
2. Use a three-step reasoning chain
Cause
What action, condition or change starts the process?
Mechanism
What happens because of it?
Effect
Why does that result matter?
Example: Frequent low-stakes practice gives students more chances to notice errors. This helps them adjust their method before a major assessment. Consequently, their final work is often more accurate and confident.
3. Linking language with a purpose
becausesincethis means thatwhich allowsas a resultconsequently
Explain the cause
Flexible schedules help adult learners because they can study around work commitments.
Show the consequence
Learners can study at a realistic time. As a result, they are more likely to maintain a regular routine.
4. Read a compact model response
Discussion question: Should companies allow employees to choose some of their training courses?
I agree that employees should have some choice in professional training. When people select a course connected to an immediate challenge, they can apply the material while it is still fresh. This creates a direct link between learning and daily work. For example, a team leader who chooses a course on feedback can test one technique in the next weekly meeting. As a result, the training becomes easier to remember and its practical value becomes visible. Companies can still require essential compliance courses, but limited choice may make the wider programme more relevant.
Find the chain
- Cause: employees choose training connected to a current challenge.
- Mechanism: they apply it immediately in real work.
- Effect: the training becomes memorable and relevant.
5. Guided practice
Complete the paragraph with: because, which allows, as a result, consequently.
Public libraries should provide quiet digital-work areas __________ many residents do not have a suitable workspace at home. Reliable internet and a calm environment reduce common distractions, __________ users to concentrate for longer periods. __________, job seekers can complete applications more carefully. Students may also work more consistently and __________ submit stronger assignments.
Check the answers
because, which allows, as a result, consequently
6. Repair weak reasoning
Each response jumps too quickly from cause to effect. Add one mechanism sentence.
- Recorded lectures are useful. Therefore, students understand difficult subjects.
- Cities should create more cycle lanes. As a result, local businesses benefit.
- Employees need regular feedback. Consequently, projects improve.
Suggested answers
- Students can replay complex explanations and pause to take notes. Therefore, they can review difficult material at their own pace.
- Safer routes encourage more people to travel slowly through commercial areas. As a result, local shops may receive more passing customers.
- Regular feedback identifies small problems before they affect later stages. Consequently, teams can correct their approach while changes are still manageable.
7. Relevance check
A good example must demonstrate the exact cause-and-effect relationship. Ask three questions:
- Does the example show the action in my claim?
- Can the reader see the intermediate step?
- Does the result support my main position?
8. Your writing task
Respond to this discussion prompt: Should universities require students to complete a practical community project?
Write one focused response. Include a clear position, one three-step reasoning chain, one specific example and a short concluding sentence.
Final check
Underline your cause, circle the mechanism and box the final effect. If one part is missing, add it before you finish.
