Join an academic discussion

A strong discussion response states a clear position, responds to an existing idea, and adds a reason or example that develops the conversation.

Three-part structure

  1. State your view directly.
  2. Connect to one point already raised.
  3. Add a new reason, example, or consequence.

Discussion topic

Should universities require students to complete community service before graduation?

Student A: Service gives students practical experience.

Model response: I agree that community service can provide practical experience, particularly when students work in an area related to their studies. It can also help them understand local needs. For example, engineering students who support an environmental project may see how technical decisions affect real communities.
