TOEFL Speaking: Build a Clear Independent Response
Organise your opinion, reason, explanation, and example so the listener can follow you easily.
Build one clear response
A strong TOEFL-style speaking response is easy to follow. Begin with a direct answer, give one reason, explain it, and add a concrete example.
Four-step structure
- State your opinion.
- Give your main reason.
- Explain why the reason matters.
- Add a brief personal or realistic example.
Practice prompt
Do you prefer studying alone or studying with other people? Explain your choice.
Model: I prefer studying with one other person because discussion helps me notice gaps in my understanding. When I explain an idea aloud, I can see whether I really understand it. For example, before my last exam, a classmate asked me questions that revealed two topics I needed to review.
