IELTS Writing | Task 2 skill
Write a Clear Two-Part Thesis Statement
Learn how to answer a two-part essay question directly and give your whole essay a reliable direction.
Why the thesis matters
A two-part question asks you to respond to two separate prompts. Your thesis statement should give a concise answer to both. This helps the reader understand your position and helps you organise one main body paragraph around each answer.
Step 1: Separate the two tasks
- Cause: Why has working from home become common?
- Evaluation: Is this positive or negative?
Underline the key instruction in each part. Do not let a long topic sentence hide the actual tasks.
Step 2: Write one precise answer for each task
Cause answer: Digital tools now allow many roles to be performed outside a central office.
Evaluation answer: This is largely positive because it gives workers flexibility and reduces commuting.
Avoid empty statements such as “There are several reasons for this trend.” The reader needs your real answer.
Step 3: Combine the answers
What makes it effective?
- It answers both parts of the question.
- It states a clear overall judgement.
- It previews the logic of the two body paragraphs.
- It avoids detailed examples that belong later in the essay.
Useful language patterns
- This trend is mainly caused by…
- The principal reason is that…
- I consider this largely positive because…
- Although it creates…, its overall effect is positive because…
Use a pattern only when it matches your real argument. Clarity is more important than sounding complicated.
Guided practice
Question: In many cities, fewer people shop in small local stores. Why is this happening? What can be done to support local businesses?
Choose the strongest thesis.
- This essay will discuss why this happens and suggest some solutions.
- Local stores are losing customers mainly because large retailers offer lower prices and greater convenience, but targeted tax support and stronger local delivery services could help them compete.
- Shopping is important, and local stores have both advantages and disadvantages.
Check the answer
B is strongest. It answers the cause question and proposes clear action. A only repeats the task, while C does not answer either part precisely.
Repair the weak thesis
Improve this sentence so that it answers both parts of the question.
Question: Why has online education grown? Do its advantages outweigh its disadvantages?
Suggested answer
Online education has grown because flexible digital platforms make courses accessible to learners in many locations, and its advantages generally outweigh its disadvantages because students gain greater choice and control over when they study.
Production task
Choose a two-part IELTS Writing Task 2 question from your study materials. Write:
- A direct answer to the first prompt.
- A direct answer to the second prompt.
- One combined thesis statement of no more than 45 words.
Final check: Does every major claim in your thesis have a logical place in the essay plan?
