Speculate and Evaluate Possibilities Clearly
Build flexible answers when you cannot be completely certain. Practise moving from an observation to a careful interpretation, then evaluate which possibility is strongest.
1. Use a three-step speaking structure
Observe
State what you can see or understand without adding assumptions.
Example: Both options involve people working together.
Speculate
Add a possible explanation with language that shows appropriate uncertainty.
Example: They might be trying to solve a difficult problem.
Evaluate
Compare the possibilities and justify your preferred interpretation.
Example: The second possibility seems more convincing because everyone is contributing.
2. Build a useful language bank

- It could suggest that…
- They appear to be…
- One possibility is that…
Evaluation
- The more likely explanation is…
- This seems more convincing because…
- Although both are possible, I would choose…
- The main advantage would be…
3. Improve a weak answer
Weak answer
They are having a meeting. It is good.
Stronger answer
They appear to be discussing a project. One possibility is that they are deciding how to divide the work. This interpretation seems convincing because several people are looking at the same plan and contributing ideas.
4. Guided practice
Situation: A company can either train its current staff to use a new system or recruit new specialists.
- Give one possible benefit of each option.
- Give one possible risk of each option.
- Choose the stronger option and justify it.
Speak for 60 to 90 seconds. Use at least two expressions from the language bank.
5. Quick accuracy check
- To show uncertainty: a) They definitely are b) They might be c) They must always be
- To evaluate evidence: a) This seems more convincing because… b) I do not know c) Both pictures are nice

6. Independent speaking task
Compare two ways to improve communication in a team: a weekly meeting or a shared written update. Speculate about the likely effects, evaluate both options and recommend one. Record a 90-second answer, then listen again for clarity, range and justification.
